District Councillor Charlie Maynard to fight Witney Parliamentary Constituency
West Oxfordshire Liberal Democrat members have selected Charlie Maynard as their parliamentary candidate for the next general election.
Recent YouGov polling has the Lib Dems and Conservatives neck and neck in this constituency, with the Lib Dems on 37%, the Conservatives on 41% and Labour a distant third on 13%.
Charlie Maynard has a track record of winning against the Conservatives, taking the Standlake, Aston and Stanton Harcourt district council seat earlier this year with a 19% swing to the Lib Dems.
Charlie became active in politics because he was concerned about the direction the country is headed, saying: “Nationally, the Conservative Party have moved to the right, with hard-line ideology stopping the country and the economy being run in a practical way to bring prosperity to all.”
“The recent doubling in mortgage rates—due almost entirely to government error—is just one example of this. At a national level, we need a much better relationship with Europe and a fairer society in terms of inequality, tax and electoral systems.”
“Robert Courts is consistently out of step with local residents, whether by voting against protecting our rivers and waterways from sewage, or taking large donations from developers or Russians.”
“Residents across West Oxfordshire know there is an alternative. Many already know what it means to have a hard-working Liberal Democrat councillor, and my aim is to deliver Witney a hard-working MP that is on their side.”
Charlie Maynard founded his own business, BDA Partners, which now has nine offices and 120 employees globally.
He is Chair of Witney Oxford Transport Group, focused on reducing West Oxfordshire’s congestion problems, including exploring restoring a rail line linking Witney and Carterton with Oxford to cut journey times. Keen to find practical solutions to problems in West Oxfordshire, Charlie spent a year working full-time on this project. Feasibility studies are now underway.
Locally, Charlie backs the Lib Dem campaign for more realistic housing targets that deliver the houses people need, with more genuinely affordable homes and with the infrastructure to support them.
