Scrap the Vagrancy Act

Layla has continued to lead the parliamentary campaign to scrap the outdated Vagrancy Act.

The campaign was originally launched by Oxford University students who lobbied Layla Moran MP to support them. Layla did not hesitate to take up the campaign and has been battling to persuade the Government to scrap the outdated legislation ever since.

A major battle was won in February 2022 when the Government finally accepted that the Act needed to go.

An amendment to the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act was supported in the House of Lords and the Government then added their own repeal clause. This Act passed into law in April 2022.

Sadly, a date has not yet been set for this to come into effect. This means the Vagrancy Act is still in operation. There was even an attempt by the Conservatives to reinstate the Act in another Bill.

Layla is continuing to work with MPs and Lords from all parties to finally get it axed.
